To understand the pace with which AI is advancing, here’s a quick lesson from Future Proof on exponential math:
“This sort of exponential progress is similar to how we were able to solve the Human Genome Project.
In 1990, scientists had the ambitious goal of decoding all 3 billion base pairs in the human genome. As with any scientific endeavor, it was hard to get funding, especially since it seemed too futuristic and nothing like it had ever been done before.
In the beginning, progress was tediously slow. Within the first 10 years, they had made it through only 1% of the pairs. At that rate, outsiders were calling the project a failure. They said we'd be lucky to finish it in 800 years! Nobody would live to see the fruits of their labor, and this critical information, which science needed to progress, would be a bottleneck for new research in molecular medicine, biotech, CRISPR, and so much more.
But futurist Ray Kurzweil just looked at that 1% completion rate, smiled, and said, 'Oh, then we're basically done'. He knew the technology supporting the project was doubling every year. One percent becomes two, then four, eight, 16, and then almost the whole blueprint of humanity was wrapped up way ahead of schedule in 2003. Everyone else was doing linear math while Kurzweil was doing exponential math."
We are currently at that "1% moment" with AI.
The gap between you and the early adopters doesn't widen gently—it explodes. This isn’t like missing an iPhone release and getting next year’s phone, which is usually quite similar. If you skip one doubling cycle in AI, you aren’t just a little behind; you’re 4x or 8x behind.
Before long, you’re staring through an AI-powered telescope at competitors who move at a velocity you can’t match with human effort alone. Waiting for the "perfect wave" or the "right budget" usually means missing the window entirely.
